MOVING CHECKLIST

"Get organised"
Here are three checklists created to assist you in getting there. Good Luck!

Before You Move

Discontinue:

  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Water
    (Inform the relevant authority at least 48 hours in advanced - meter to be read).

Cancel:

  • Milk
  • Bread
  • Newspapers

Redirect:

  • Mail (Any post office can give you a form to arrange this).
  • Telephones (Cancel and re-connect if moving to a different area).

Advise people of your new address:
Go through your address book and send out change of address cards. Your local instant printer or post office should be able to supply these at a low cost, please add or just click here to order free of charge from our office.

  • Clubs
  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Groups
  • Others:

Notify

  • Banks
  • Accountant
  • Solicitor
  • Tax Office
  • RTA (Driver's licenses and registrations)
  • Electoral Commission
  • Insurance Companies
  • Credit Card Companies
Others:
  • Book the Removalist
  • Arrange insurance for goods in transit
  • Prepare floor plan of new house and number rooms
  • Pack jewellery and valuables and lodge in a safe deposit box or arrange a special carrier
  • Pack fragile items yourself
  • Mark each carton with the room for which it's intended
  • Mark items to be handled with special care
  • Clearly mark any item to be stored
  • Carefully dispose of flammable, poisonous or dangerous substances
  • Dispose of rubbish or unwanted possessions
  • Water the garden
  • Remove food and defrost freezer/fridge

When Moving

Last Packing:
  • Fit and tighten lids and covers to bottles and containers, then pack carefully
  • Pack "emergency rations"
Turn Off:
  • Electricity Keys n' things:
  • Check all cupboards, storerooms, attics, basements and under the house
  • Lock up securely
  • Give keys to agent or new owner.
  • Clean up - leave it as you'd like to find it

Moving In

Think Ahead
  • Have the carpet steam cleaned
  • Plan - Where does everything go?
  • Clean cupboards - especially for food and clothes
  • Any urgent repairs - broken windows, lights, roof leaks?
  • Time since last redecoration?
  • Arrange for things to happen - on the day you move in:
  • Electricity
    • Gas
    • Water
    • Telephone
    • House and contents insurance
  • Change locks?
  • Improve security for insurance requirements?
  • When you're ready - organise yourself.
When you arrive:
  • Milk delivery
  • Bread delivery
  • Newspaper delivery
  • Clean the whole house thoroughly. After all you're making a fresh start - you want everything to be spotless.
  • Say hello to the neighbours
